Runaway PWSA Truck Damages 12 Cars On South Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – As many as a dozen vehicles were damaged by a runaway Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority truck.

It happened on the South Side on Mission, McCord, Stella and Shelly streets.

Most of the damage was along Mission Street.

About 12 vehicles were damaged, some of them totaled.

The impact also sent a car into the front porch of a house.

"It was basically just a domino effect down the street," said Kaitlin Rivest. "It was pretty crazy."

Pittsburgh Police are busy taking accident reports along those roads.

A PWSA representative says he doesn't know the condition of the truck's driver or what the circumstances were.

"I was down in the basement, playing video games and I heard a giant crash," said Jordan Harris, whose car was damaged. "My wife yelled, I looked up, I saw the PWSA truck and it impacted our car, pushed past it. And then grabbed my shoes, ran out and saw it hit and hit and hit."

KDKA found the PWSA truck stopped on Mission Street. It also has damage, including two flat tires.

The PWSA is looking into whether the driver suffered a medical event, or whether he was under the influence of something.

PWSA Executive Director Jim Good told KDKA, "We don't know. And that's why, in any situation like this, we take our employees in for testing."

The PWSA also released a statement Monday night, saying:

"Earlier today a PWSA truck driver was involved in a vehicle accident. We are truly thankful that no one was injured. PWSA will conduct an internal investigation into the series of events that led to this terrible incident."
