Break Dancers Battle It Out At The Arts Fest

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The moves are unique and daring – and for most of us, downright dangerous.

But these guys are pros.

Randal Miller has been break dancing for 16 years, ever since he checked a break dancing book out of the library in his hometown in southeastern Pennsylvania.

"This pre-YouTube and so there were a couple moves in the bottom corner of the book that you could like flip book through, so you could see what it looked like in motion," said Miller.

He learned more and more and continued to practice.

Now, he's a member of a group based out of Allentown, called "Hidden Characters."
He competes all over the place.

"It just takes time and dedication, just like anything," Miller said. "Like, it's harder than most people think it would be."

Dwayne Moyer, 25, is also a breaker with "Hidden Characters."

"It's a combination of, like, every single style," said Moyer. "Like, there's some jazz , some tap, some ballet. Everything is incorporated and you have to, like really feel the music in order to really get the dance."

Miller and Moyer will be battling it out with a Pittsburgh group called the "Get Down Gang."

They say they're ready for the challenge and are excited to be performing for a crowd at the Arts Fest.

"My moves are strictly like head-based and neck-based because I have a really strong neck, so I'm good at, like, head balance, head spins, halos, that kind of stuff," said Moyer.

"It's going to be high-energy, it's going to be fun," he added. "We're a really fun group. We'd love to dance and impress the crowd."

"For anyone watching, pay attention to the detail, because sometimes that is what makes it cool or interesting," says Miller.

You can check out the dance-off Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the Stanwix stage.
