Cranberry Residents Begin Cleanup Process After Tornado
BUTLER COUNTY (KDKA) – Fortunately no one was hurt when a tornado touched down Saturday in Cranberry, but residents did spend Sunday cleaning up the mess.
We've seen several trees that fell as a result of the tornado that came through Cranberry. For the people who had trees fall in their yard, many say they are thankful for the help of their neighbors to help clean up the damage.
Chainsaws and rakes were the tools of choice Sunday for people in Cranberry who were cleaning up after Saturday's tornado.
"It was like a bad windstorm, and I didn't realize, we kept saying no, that wasn't a tornado," said Susan Cwik.
But it was – an EF0 tornado, according to the National Weather Service, with wind speeds up to 60 to 70 miles per hour.
It touched down in Cranberry, between 5:06 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. Saturday afternoon, starting at Chaparral Drive and heading north.
That's where Susan Cwik spent the day helping her neighbor clear the leaves and tree limbs after the wind brought down his favorite tree.
"It is, I loved how it shaded the house, kept the heat out," said Tom Huffman.
For college student Tyler Sammons, who owns a landscaping service, downed trees mean a lot of business.
"Probably working all week, because I've had probably 10 different people call me because they need their trees removed as fast as possible," said Sammons, who owns Poor College Kid Landscaping.
He's helping a neighbor who was away when the tornado touched down. Pierre Khoury returned home to find 15 of his trees damaged.
"Absolutely amazing," he said. "The power and force of the storm, it was just amazing. From what I was told, it was only about 15 seconds of the storm that came through here."
The tornado moved very quickly when it came through Cranberry Saturday afternoon - uprooting trees and breaking tree limbs, even one very old oak tree couldn't withstand the strong winds
There were no injuries reported as a result of the storm, only downed trees and power lines.
