Pitt's Langley Hall Damaged In Crane Accident

OAKLAND (KDKA) – A crane slammed into the side of Langley Hall on the University of Pittsburgh's campus Friday morning.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the incident happened around 9:30 a.m.

Workers were unloading scaffolding from a truck with the crane on Ruskin Avenue.

Crews believed an outrigger or jackstand was not properly in place, which caused the crane to tip over and hit the building. However, that hasn't been confirmed.

"We'll be looking into that, as will the construction company itself, looking into what the cause of the accident was," said Ken Service with the University of Pittsburgh.

As a result, Langley Hall suffered only minor damage to the eaves. In fact, the crane wasn't even working on Langley Hall, it was working on nearby Ruskin Hall.

"It's under investigation, I mean there's a lot of things that could have happened there," said Jack Kramer with Franco Associates. "It wasn't a significant load that was on there. In fact, there was no load on it. So it's under investigation."
