7-Eleven Clerk Jumps Attempted Robber, Holds Her Until Police Arrive

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A woman is in jail after trying to rob a Turtle Creek 7-Eleven, and authorities don't think it was her first time.

Police say the woman went into the store around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

However, the store owner and clerk jumped her from behind and were able to hold her down until police arrived.

She's been identified as 26-year-old Sydney Baird from Turtle Creek.

She had a gun, but the clerk said when she put it down on the counter, he could tell that it was fake.

The same store was robbed Wednesday. Police are looking into whether Baird's behind both robberies.

The owner of the store says he's certain it was the same person. Wednesday she was able to get away with cash and cigarettes.

He didn't want to talk on camera, but said there's surveillance footage from both robberies.

"A little scary," said Don Watt, who owns Mathey's Auto Service nearby. "I mean, we've never had much trouble here, but it's close to home."

He says in recent years, that area of Turtle Creek has changed.

"I guess some people are desperate right now," said Watt. "I don't know, it's hard to understand their mentality, but you know, stuff like that happens and if they get an easy amount of cash, I guess they're going to try it again."

Baird was taken to the hospital before being taken to jail.
