FOP Tries To Reverse PennDOT Registration Sticker Phase-OUT

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Pennsylvania is set to phase out the rectangular registration stickers on license plates by the end of 2016, so long as the Federal Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) does not convince lawmakers to reverse legislation.

According to the Tribune-Review, the phase-out is a part of the state's transportation funding bill, and could save PennDOT around $1 million a year.

Yet Craig McGowan, speaking on behalf of the FOP, argues the stickers are very valuable in helping law enforcement identify suspicious vehicles.

"You notice that's not on there, and you're going to stop the car, and that's your (probable cause) to have further investigation… It has led to a lot of other things just because they had a sticker missing," McGowan told the Trib.

PennDOT Deputy Secretary Kurt Myers praises the phase-out, and says reversing it could cost $4.2 million.

"We want the customer to be able to go online, renew their registration, and print their registration card at home… It's an opportunity to embrace the future or to return to the past."
