PONY League World Series Puts Washington County In Spotlight

WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) — In less than four weeks, the Dick's Sporting Goods PONY League World Series champion will be crowned.

The first game of the championship tournament will be played on Friday, Aug. 7, and will once again put Washington, Pennsylvania, in the world spotlight.

For the 34th straight year, the worldwide growth of youth baseball is coming together at Lew Hayes PONY Field in Washington County.

Six teams from different regions across the United States, along with teams from Austria, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Chinese-Tapei will compete for the world title.

Officials say the tournament is part of the county's tourism strategy.

It's a business that employees 6,500 people and generates an estimated $700 million in revenue.

"As we welcome and host these visitors from the four corners of the globe, we will continue to improve the World Series and develop new partners and new ways to highlight not only the World Series but also Washington County as we highlight our terrific growing, economically-diverse county to the world," said Jeff Kotula, the president of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.

Pittsburgh's CW will bring you live TV coverage of the PONY League World Series championship game on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
