Propel Teachers, Staff Hit The Streets To Prepare For Back To School

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Kids may not want to hear this, but there are some teachers who are already hard at work getting ready for back to school.

And efforts are being made at Propel in Hazelwood to reach out to parents and students this summer.

The finishing touches are being put on the back-to-school blitz.

This summer, teachers and staff members from the school hit the streets to hand-deliver packets.

"It's more personal than getting it in the mail," said mother Nyeasha Wright. "And it shows that the staff really do care to do everything they can to make sure that the kids are prepared for school."

"They come to the house and drop off the packets, which I love," said Bridget Mesko of Hazelwood. "It's a personal touch and everyone comes out in the morning and greets the kids so it's a fun experience for the kids."

It's just one way the staff tries to overachieve as they work to turn all their students into scholars.

"The little bit extra that it is or that it takes allows for a little better and stronger relationships that we can build," said Propel Hazelwood Elementary Assistant Principal Bethany Thomas. The families, you know, they can count on us, they can trust in us. They know that we go above and beyond."

"The response that we got was absolutely amazing," said Community Specialist Eric Ewell. "People were just so excited that their kids would be able to walk to school versus get on the bus."

Parents echo those thoughts and are thrilled to once again have a neighborhood school option.

"It will help lift our neighborhood as far as -- because the teachers come out and they show that they really care and you see the guys out in 90 degree weather walking up and down the street handing out pamphlets," said Holly Wright, the father of a Propel student. "So that is why I love for my kids to continue on going to that school."

And it's hard to believe that in just a few weeks, they'll be back at school.
