Police Probe Officer Involved Shooting In Carrick

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Police are investigating a shooting involving a police officer that happened in Carrick Saturday morning.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. at a home on Reifert Street.

Officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Police encountered 34-year-old Charles Smith. They say he resisted arrest, they tried using a Taser, but he was able to flee.

However, police say they spotted Smith walking down a street in Carrick about four hours later. Police followed him as he went to a home and allegedly packaged some marijuana.

Police then used another Taser on Smith, but he was able to disable the prongs and refused to surrender to officers.

"The male lunged toward the officer," said Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Larry Scirotto. "The officer, fearing that the individual, arrestee was going to disarm him, fired one shot. The arrestee immediately surrendered, complied and was taken into custody without incident."

"He was not injured as a result of the encounter, neither was our officer," he added.

Smith is currently in police custody facing multiple charges.
