Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Found In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Allegheny County Health Department has announced it will spray pesticide in Pittsburgh's West End after Mosquitos tested positive for West Nile Virus.

"We've had two pools of Mosquitos that tested positive in the West End, so that really gives us an indication that we want to reduce the risk," said Dr. Karen Hacker, director of the Allegheny County Health Department.

A truck will spray a new pesticide called Zenivex between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday.

That will happen along Chartiers Avenue and Middletown Road in Sheraden and Corliss.

Dr. Hacker says cases of humans infected with West Nile have actually gone down over the years.

She also says only about twenty percent of people infected actually develop symptoms.

She says the spray being used is safe for humans and pets, but it will kill adult Mosquitos.
