End Of An Era, Pittsburghers Say Goodbye To Arcade Bakery, Tic Toc Cafe

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Time is running out for the Macy's on Fifth Avenue downtown.

The department store is set to close in early September.

"I'm very disappointed because I came to Macy's a lot to shop," said Bonnie Garritano. "Practically once a week, and now there's really nowhere else to go."

While there is still some time to shop, Friday people said goodbye to the Arcade Bakery – a place known for its sweet treats, especially the thumbprint cookies.

"It's tasty, it's sweets, everybody wasn't a thumbprint from Macy's," said Michelle Anderson.

Loyal customers lined up outside the baker before it opened, wanting to stop in one last time.

"Usually I get coffee cakes or donuts," said Patti Sturm of Bethel Park. "My boss loves their thumbprints, it's sad to see all the staples from downtown disappearing."

Regulars will have to find a new place for cakes, cookies and other treats.

There are certainly other bakeries in town, but they say walking by the building on the way to work just won't be the same.

"It's kind of sad because the building and the bakery and the Tic Toc, it's been a Pittsburgh landmark for many years and it just seems like nothing lasts and I'm kind of sad about that," said Jim McIntire.

City officials say they are working with Macy's to secure the rights to the Tic Toc and Arcade Bakery names, hoping both will continue to be a part of Pittsburgh.
