Mercer Co. Woman Facing Murder Charges In Death Of Her Husband

SHARON, Pa. (KDKA) -- Police in Mercer County have filed murder charges against a woman in connection with the shooting death of her husband near the hospital in Sharon last weekend.

Amy Emmett, 46, of Greenville, is now facing first- and third-degree murder charges.

Police say she's accused of shooting her husband three times and then turning the gun on herself.

According to the criminal complaint, Amy Emmett and her husband, 45-year-old William, were discovered last Sunday in a parking lot of the Sharon Regional Health System at Woodrow Court and East State Street.

He had been shot in the neck and chest and died at the scene, and she had two gunshot wounds to the torso. Police say the couple has three teenage children.

William Emmett, investigators say, worked at Sharon Regional Hospital.

The criminal complaint reports Amy Emmett was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, where the staff treating her say they found writing on her body, including the words "Van at Walgreen's grey," and a number code to unlock a cell phone.

Police say they later found the couple's gray minivan parked in the nearby Walgreen's parking lot.

Police said at a news conference today that before the shooting, Amy Emmett parked the vehicle there and then walked behind the store to the hospital parking lot.

"Initially, the Sharon Police Department acted on suspicion that there was a struggle between the two and that somehow the gun had discharged and both of them had ended up with multiple gunshot wounds. We later learned that Amy Emmett had actually shot William Emmett and then shot herself," said Sharon Police Chief Gerald Smith. "We also learned through an eyewitness that Amy shot herself after William Emmett was already on the ground."

According to the criminal complaint, police say she also admitted to "transporting the firearm to the location of the incident," and that "she shot herself twice." However, when investigators asked her if she shot her husband, she said "she could not remember."

"Our investigation also revealed that the gun that was brought to the scene was owned by Amy Emmett and was actually purchased by her in May of 2014," said Chief Smith.

The criminal complaint reports a relative of the couple told investigators about a text message from Amy Emmett.

According to the criminal complaint, "the body of the text message indicated William Emmett had asked Ay Emmett for a divorce."

Amy Emmett remains in critical but stable condition. Police say they will allow her to recover before she is formally arraigned.
