Hundreds Head To Pittsburgh For Disc Golf Championships

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Competitors from all over the world have descended on Pittsburgh, for the Disc Golf Professional World Championships.

Frisbees will be flying on the fairways at four disc golf courses, north of Pittsburgh. One of them is the tricky par 61 course in Knob Hill Park, near Wexford. The "golf ball" is a disc and the "hole" is a basket.

Communications director Maria Montano says disc golfers will be competing for $80,000 in prize money.

"Over 400 players from 10 different countries will be coming to Pittsburgh this week to compete for the title of World Champion," she says.

The true professional has a disc for every distance.

"The drivers are going to be a lot more aerodynamic, have a smaller rim," says Cory Hill of Pekin, Illinois. "And then your putters have the deepest rim, and are great for approaching toward the basket."

Sara Lamberson of Nashville turned pro, after placing second in the World Amateur Championships last year. She compared a disc golf course with ball golf.

"Disc golf courses tend to be a lot more wooded. Shorter. We measure in feet instead of yards."

But the goal is the same: fewest shots wins.

Spectators are admitted free to all four tournament locations. For more information on the five-day Disc Golf Professional World Championships, log on to: PDGA.com.
