Severe Storms Move Through Area, Bringing Hail & Causing Damage

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Thunderstorms and showers moved through the region Monday night, bringing hail, heavy rains and lightning, and causing damage.

Severe thunderstorm warnings have been in effect across the area for much of the night. Even into early Tuesday morning a Thunderstorm Watch was issued for for Allegheny, Fayette, Westmoreland and Washington counties through 1 a.m.

A Flood Advisory was also in effect for Allegheny, Westmoreland and Washington counties through 11:30 p.m., but has since expired.

"It's been an active evening of scattered showers and some thunderstorms, most of which have been producing some pockets of heavier rain, thunder and lightning, and numerous reports of hail coming in from across the area this afternoon and into this evening," said KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla.

Verszyla says things should quiet down overnight.

"The remaining showers and thundershowers will be pressing out of the area," he says. "Maybe a period of lingering clouds overnight, but we'll see breaks in the cloud deck as we get into wake up hours."

Meanwhile, damage reports are coming in from parts of the area.

One of the hardest hit seems to be South Park.

KDKA's Ross Guidotti reports trees and wires down in that neighborhood. One of the wires caught fire and caused some trees to smolder. Residents there have been told not to walk in the grass until the situation has been resolved.

A lightning strike also caused a gas leak at a nearby home. Fire and repair crews were called in to shut off the gas and fix the problem.

"The gas was leaking, it blew it out and the gas was leaking into the house. That house should of blown, but it didn't. We don't know why. They said we're very lucky," said the woman who lives there.

Also in South Park, a water main break has left some residents without water. Officials expect full restoration within about 12 hours.

The good news, Verszyla says Tuesday looks much better with a mix of clouds and sun and a high of 80 degrees.
