South Park Residents Cleaning Up Aftermath Of Powerful Storms

SOUTH PARK (KDKA) - Some powerful and destructive storms moved through the area last night. Today, some residents in South Park were still cleaning up the mess.

For some residents, the past several hours have been a whirlwind from downed wires catching fire, to having no power.

"I have three kids so it's been a big inconvenience. Sleeping with no air all night and everything else, all the food in the fridge, in the freezers," Melody Batchelor said.

Lighting struck one house, which caused a gas leak as well.

"The gas was leaking into the house. That house should've blown, but it didn't. We don't know why, they say we're very lucky," Kerry Okain said.

One neighborhood off of Brownsville Road Extension, was especially hit hard.

"When it was over, we looked back here and trees are down, telephone poles...the neighbor's shed got uprooted. It was pretty bad," Shelly Waskewich said.

A water main that broke last week broke again when the storms came through, which flooded the streets.

Today, crews were out making the necessary repairs and neighbors reported having service.

Most have power back too, except for a few who say they're told they'll get it restored by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
