Cops: Man Angry Baby Wasn't Named For Him Killed Ex, Grandma

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A man, whose former girlfriend was found dead along with her grandmother in the East Hills in May, has been arrested and charged.

Cesar Mazza was actually arrested in Newark, New Jersey, in May. There were outstanding bench warrants for failing to appear in court on charges that he previously assaulted 19-year-old Tionna Banks while she was pregnant.

Mazza has now officially been charged with two counts of homicide for allegedly killing Banks and her 72-year-old grandmother.

Pittsburgh Police Commander Larry Scirotto says they always had a suspect in mind.

"Mr. Mazza fought extradition. Mr. Mazza was extradited from Newark, New Jersey, on the 31 of July and the formal charge was filed last night," said Commander Scirotto.

Banks previously filed a protection from abuse order against Mazza. Police say in November 2014, Banks said Mazza punched and kicked her stomach while she was five months pregnant because she did not want to name their son after him.

In May, police believe the abusive, violent relationship turned deadly. According to court papers, on May 4, Banks was visiting her grandmother, Valorie Crumpton, in the East Hills with her then 3-month-old son in tow.

Police say they spoke with a witness who went with Mazza to the home, but waited outside. Mazza came out over 15 minutes later, according to the witness, with the baby and a cut on his hand.

Mazza allegedly said he got into a scuffle with Banks, but everything was okay. Later, witnesses described seeing Mazza with blood on his body and clothes.

Crumpton and Bank's bodies were found May 7, when police went to the home for a welfare check.

An autopsy revealed that both women had been beaten and Banks was stabbed 15 times.

Days after the homicide, Mazza was arrested in New Jersey for failing to appear on the previous charges for allegedly assaulting Banks.

He was extradited Friday and has now been charged with homicide.

"Next will be, hopefully, have the successful prosecution of Mazza for the murders of Valorie Crumpton and Tionna Banks," Commander Scirotto said.

On top of the two counts of homicide, Mazza has also been charged with one count of kidnapping a minor.
