Pirates' Cervelli Shows Off His Culinary Talents At Children's Museum

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Francisco Cervelli has been a great catch for the Pirates ever since he joined the team this season. Behind the plate and crossing the plate, he's given fans plenty to cheer about.

He was also a big hit at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh on Friday.

Joined by museum chef Angelo Galioto, Cervelli, a native of Venezuela, shared his love of cooking. The Pirates catcher is also right at home with Italian dishes.

"My dad was born in Italy and my grandmother," he says. "And my mother likes to cook a little bit of everything."

It's not every day kids get served by a baseball star.

Cervelli volunteered to be part of the museum's first Culinary Craft Camp.

"I think this is the start of something really good here," he says. "They're able to see how somebody really good cooks."

Cervelli and Galioto made stuffed shells, topped by marinara sauce. Chef Galioto says events like this are intended to get families away from fast food, and into eating at home.

"Eating at home is a time for the family to get together and bind and get to talk to each other. Without their cell phones, I hope," he says.

After the cooking demonstration, Cervelli added the "craft" to Culinary Craft Camp, sharing his talents as an artist, showing kids how to create work of their own. It's easy - and there's no catch to it.
