UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex Opens In Cranberry

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting ready for another season.

And Friday, KDKA got a look at their new training facility.

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry isn't just for the Pens though. It's a new outpatient facility for athletes of all ages to get information about injury prevention and treatment.

Inside there's two full-size hockey rinks and a locker room that looks pretty familiar – it's identical to the one at CONSOL Energy Center.

The Pens will practice there, but it's not all about them.

"I don't think people are really going to understand it until they see it," said Tom McMillan, Vice President of Communications for the Penguins. "It is going to be a great service to the community."

There's a lot of focus on budding talent, kids who want to grow up to be just like the stars.

"We've also developed a performance center with Gary Roberts, who will take our children form just skating on the ice to optimizing their performance with dry land training," said Dr. Vonda Wright, the medical director for the complex.

The new complex is built on four pillars: elite sports medicine, elite hockey, a performance center and world-class research.

UPMC and the Penguins have teamed up to make something that hasn't been done anywhere else in the country.

"We did look around to see where's the best facility in the country, maybe we can top it," said McMillan. "We found out there wasn't any facility doing this, so this is breaking new ground."

The complex has a physical therapy gym, on-site MRI and X-Ray imaging, aquatic therapy and doctors of every kind.
