Rain & Storms Move Into Area, Cause Flooding Problems

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – There has not been much rain around the area of late, but that changes today.

According to KDKA-TV Meteorologist Ron Smiley, rain moved into the area overnight and some heavier downpours and storms can be expected this morning.

Lightning will also be associated with the initial push of rain into the Pittsburgh area.

A flood advisory was in effect until 7 a.m. for parts of the area as well.

Shortly after 6 a.m., at least five cars became stuck in water along the 4800-block of Streets Run Road in Baldwin.

For Rich Sowers, his commute took a scary turn when a slight covering of water quickly turned deep.

"It was almost immediately that it started coming into the car," he said.

He and his wife were trapped. The water was close to their windshield and he wasn't' alone.

"The waves come up and that's what actually got the car even worse and that's what pushed our car into the car that was next to us," he said.

Rescue crews came in and helped Sowers and two others to safety. Crews put vests on them to make sure they wouldn't fall through the sewers.

"It was probably, the deepest 4 feet. It receded pretty quickly. We got most of the people out quickly, but we had to wait for the TRT team to come in get the other victims out," Baldwin Fire Chief Kevin Kenny

For Tim Chapon, who owns Chapon's Greenhouse nearby, this scene is a familiar one.

He said every time there are heavy rains the road tends to flood.

"Same thing every time. That grate gets covered, water comes over the road," he said.

More rain showers are expected for this afternoon with a smaller chance for storms.

Today's high will be 80 degrees. More wet weather is expected tomorrow with a high of 82 degrees.
