Equipment Valued At $10K Stolen From Tree Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local non-profit organization is missing $10,000 of equipment after thieves broke in Monday night.

The incident happened in the middle of the night at Tree Pittsburgh's nursery near the intersection of Butler and 62nd Streets in Lawrenceville.

On Tuesday morning when the nursery staff arrived, they found the gate open, two shipping containers open and equipment missing.

The staff says they use the equipment to plant and preserve trees around the community.

"We're guessing at least $10,000 worth," said Danielle Crumrine, of Tree Pittsburgh. "We not only grow trees but we also store our supplies and equipment for all of our programs, including tree care and tree planting. We also have here generator and water pumps because we draw water from the river to water our trees. All of that equipment was stolen, as well."

It appears the thieves knew exactly what they wanted, almost as if they had a list.

"It's going to put a crunch first on watering our trees because the equipment that was stolen we use to water our nursery trees, but also a lot of the tools that were stolen, we use at tree care events," said Crumrine. "We have one tonight; luckily, we do have some tools left that we can use for the event in Carrick. But we're definitely going to have to reorder in time for tree planting season when we have lots and lots of volunteers coming up."

Tree Pittsburgh was targeted by thieves several years ago when computers were stolen.
