PennDOT Announces Weekend Inbound Parkway West Closure

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Work on the Parkway West and Fort Pitt Tunnel will have an impact on traffic this weekend.

According to PennDOT, the inbound Parkway West and Fort Pitt Tunnel will be closed from 9 p.m. tonight through 10 a.m. Saturday.

However, those areas will close again at 9 p.m. Saturday and will reopen at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

Crews will be working between the Green Tree/Mt. Lebanon Interchange (Exit 67) and the Fort Pitt Bridge, which includes the tunnel.

The following detour will be in effect:

Posted eastbound detour route (between Green Tree and Fort Pitt Bridge)

Inbound (eastbound)

  • All inbound traffic will take the Green Tree (Exit 67) off-ramp
  • Turn left onto Greentree Road
  • Greentree Road becomes Wabash Street
  • Turn right onto South Main Street
  • Turn right onto southbound Route 837 (West Carson Street)
  • Take the ramp to East I-376/North I-279 onto the Fort Pitt Bridge
  • End detour

PennDOT has taken a hard look at the ballgame schedules and adjusted the closures.

"Make this a little less painful for individuals heading to both the Pirates and Steelers games," said PennDOT's Steve Cowan.

On Saturday morning, the inbound Parkway will reopen at 10 so fans can get to the Pirates afternoon game at PNC Park.

But beware for the ride home; starting Friday at 9 p.m. the outbound Parkway goes to a single lane outside the Fort Pitt Tunnel and the Banksville Road Interchange (Exit 69A) through 2 p.m. Sunday.

Expect the resulting backup to jam the Fort Pitt Tunnel and bridge.

"We'll definitely see some congestion issues going outbound," said Cowan.

Steelers fans should also beware that Saturday at 9 p.m., they're again closing the inbound Parkway, and it will remain closed until 10 a.m. Sunday. That's a full two hours after the Heinz Field parking lots open.

"We would suggest to individuals heading to the game early that they check with the department to see if we've reopened the road, and if not, they may want to consider an alternative route," Cowan said.
