Woman Stabbed To Death In Beaver Co. Apartment

NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - Authorities say a man was taken into custody after a woman was stabbed to death during an altercation at a western Pennsylvania apartment building.

"A lady and a gentleman got into an altercation with knives," said neighbor Anthony Moore. "The man came out running and hit the alley, and the lady was laying up in the hallway dead, with a knife in her hand."

Police in Beaver County said it happened inside a unit at the Mulberry Apartments in New Brighton at 11 p.m. Saturday. Officers found 59-year-old Deborah Hill-Payne stabbed multiple times.

She was taken to Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"This is very rare that we have murders in New Brighton," said Moore.

Kevin Hooks, 52, stopped police in the parking lot of the police station. He was taken into custody after he was found to have a severe cut on his hand.

Hooks has been charged with criminal homicide. He's being held in the Beaver County Jail.

Neighbors remembered "Miss Debbie" as a quite woman who kept to herself.

"She didn't bother no one," said neighbor Wanda Brown. "She was quiet, to me she was just a nice lady. When I found out what happened, it hurt me to my heart."
