Boy Who Received Organ Transplant Dies

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 4-year-old boy who received a life-saving organ transplant has died.

It was seven weeks ago when we met with Angelo Giorno and his dads who talked about the 4-year-old's recovery from an intestine transplant.

"The doctors are concerned with a little bit of rejection, but they're trying to… they've got to a find a balance with medications to get that cleared up, but other than that, you wouldn't know he was sick," said Dean Kuhns, Angelo's dad, said back in July.

Kuhns and his husband Dale Darazio took Angelo into their family in Derry, Westmoreland County, three years ago.

He was born with his intestines outside his body and forced to spend 16 hours a day attached to an IV, but then they got the news that the transplant they were waiting for was about to happen.

Angelo's new intestine came from Olivia, a little girl in Nebraska who died of brain cancer. Her liver went to another local boy, Lucas Goeller.

Things were going well for Angelo, but then a week ago, word came that Angelo was having a hard time fighting an infection.

Then, on Friday, his dads posted a picture on Facebook with the sad news.

"Angelo went to dance in the clouds early this morning; his little body just could not fight the adenovirus any longer. Please remember him as the carefree, spirited, fun-loving little guy he was."
