String Of Vacant House Fires Worries Residents In Beaver Falls

BEAVER FALLS (KDKA) -- Residents in one Beaver County town are on edge after a string of abandoned house fires over the last seven days.

Two of the fires happened at the corner of 10th Avenue and 11th Street in Beaver Falls early Sunday morning. On Monday afternoon, it was still smoldering. That does not ease tensions.

"I pray that whoever the person is, God will bring them to the light, and this will all end. It will end," says Mary Bentley, of Beaver Falls.

In all, there have been seven fires within a week. It started last week in Beaver Falls' Mt. Washington neighborhood in the rear of a house on 12th Avenue.

A couple of days later, a house not far away on 11th Avenue burned to the ground.

Then, just a few hours after that, A house on Center Avenue was fully on fire when the fire department got there. Firefighters were able to keep it from spreading.

That fear of spreading is just what worries Erica Thomas and her 8-year-old daughter.

"It sure does, especially with kids you know, and it being so dry out here, it could just spread anywhere from house to house," said Thomas. "See I've lived up here for a while now."

The fire department urges residents to keep an eye on vacant properties in their neighborhoods.

The department is also looking at vulnerable properties and planning their attack on fires in abandoned structures should the trend continue.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to contact either the Beaver Falls Fire Department or Police Department.
