Indiana Native Drumming Away In Colbert's "Late Show" Band

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – If you spend much time at the Saylor house in Indiana, Pa. the chances are you'll be watching the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

They DVR every episode.

Nevin and Paula Saylor are the proud parents of Joey Saylor. He's the drummer for Colbert's late night band.

"It's surreal, it's crazy, it's kind of like a dream come true," said father Nevin Saylor.

It's a little crazy, but not so much when you consider how Joey grew up.

"Everything became a drumstick," said Paula Saylor. "And we still have the picture of the French fries being the drumstick and everything was a drum."

Joey eventually got his first drum set at the age of 3. He played his first gig when he was 8.
His father's the retired band leader at Indiana High. His mother is the choir director at Purchase Line High School.

"We'd like to think the genes have something to do with it," said Nevin. "But he does have a passion and a built-in love of the art form that just fostered it as well."

"When he could keep a steady beat, and then veer away from keeping a steady beat and actually play an accompaniment to a song, then we knew this was a talent we could foster," said Paula.

And there's already been a Pittsburgh connection on the show. On Thursday, former Steeler Coach Bill Cowher and Steeler great Franco Harris were guests.

Joey got to toss a tambourine in a clumsy reenactment of the immaculate reception.

And on the first night of the show, his parents were there. They even got to sit on the set.
