Medics Called After Wilkinsburg H.S. Student Pours Gas On Security Guard

WILKINSBURG (KDKA/AP) – Emergency officials were called to Wilkinsburg High School after a student allegedly poured gasoline on a security guard.

According to emergency dispatchers, the incident happened around 9:30 a.m.

A spokesman for the school district says a 16-year-old female student attacked the security guard by pouring gasoline hidden inside a soda bottle.

"Parents have been notified via alert now which is our mass response system. We're going to keep the apprised as much as we can," Wilkinsburg School District Acting Superintendent Joseph Petrella said.

Wilkinsburg School District spokesman Pete Camarda says the school was evacuated Monday morning. He says officials are contacting parents of students in the seventh- through 12th- grade school in Pittsburgh's eastern suburbs so they can be picked up.

The student was involved in a milk-throwing incident with the security guard on Friday. She was to be disciplined Monday morning.

Instead, she allegedly showed up with a 2-liter soda bottle filled with gasoline. When the guard told her she couldn't bring it into school, the girl allegedly poured it on the guard.

"I told her three times to go on about her business because I wasn't going to deal with her," said security guard Brandon Murray. "Then she made the threat, 'I'll throw this in your face.' I told her if you throw it we're going to have a problem and that's when she threw it. It wasn't until after she threw it I realized it was gasoline."

At that time, the girl allegedly pulled out a grill lighter, but another guard intervened and prevented her from using it.

Murray has only been assigned to school security since the year started.

"Personally, I wanted to put my hands on her in a very aggressive way," said Murray. "But I couldn't do that to her, so the best thing was to restrain her from doing anything further, like striking a match."

The student is in custody, but there is no word on what charges they may face.

The rest of the students were moved to the nearby Hosanna House, due to an odor of gasoline in the building. They have since been sent home for the day.

"My daughter called me and I guess she was on the third floor and she started smelling the fumes," Shadon Sewell said.

No injuries were reported.
