Suspect Steals Car From Downtown 7-Eleven With Toddler Inside

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Pittsburgh Police received a call just after 11 p.m. Sunday for a report of a stolen vehicle, with a toddler inside.

The SUV was parked outside the 7-Eleven on Liberty Avenue in Downtown Pittsburgh

"When officers were investigating, it was determined that the individual parked in front of the 7-Eleven, left the keys inside, with the infant inside, and when he came out, the car was gone," said Emily Shaffer, Asst. PIO, of Pittsburgh Public Safety.

The driver told police his SUV wasn't running, but the keys were in the ignition. The 2-year-old was in the backseat, in her car seat.

It's not known if the person who stole the SUV knew there was an infant inside.

"I'm sure they didn't realize, but they don't care, either," said Michael Dingman, as he waited for a bus on Liberty Avenue.

"That's crazy," said Dawneisha Sloan, as she stood near the 7-Eleven. "That shouldn't have happened, like why do you leave your child outside?"

Police found the 2-year-old girl on Stanwix Street, less than a mile away from where her father parked at the 7-Eleven.

Someone driving by saw the child on the sidewalk near the intersection of Stanwix Street and Liberty Avenue, and called police. The child was still in her car seat.

Police are looking for the stolen SUV. It's described as a 2005 silver GMC Envoy.

As part of their investigation, officers will check if nearby businesses have surveillance video showing someone taking the SUV and dropping off the toddler on the sidewalk.

Anyone with information should call 911.
