Police: 4 Hopewell HS Students Accused Of Drawing Targets Over Classmates' Faces In Snapchat

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Social media has landed several Hopewell High School students in trouble with the district and police.

Snapchat is a fun messaging app used for sharing moments with friends, but what was allegedly shared by the students has some concerned.

Last Monday, Hopewell Police were contacted by the school district.

"There were some pictures being taken with the crosshairs of a scope on the phone," said Hopewell Police Chief Brian Uhrmacher. "The pictures were being taken of people in the school facility."

The accused are four high school boys. They are accused of using the Snapchat app to draw scope-like targets over the photos of classmates.

"I say that's pretty disrespectful," said Hunter Hanson, a Hopewell student. "They should get disciplined for that because that could be a threat."

The app allows the user to take a photo or video and add a caption, then send it to others. The snap can only be viewed for up to 10 seconds, and then it disappears.

KDKA's Brenda Waters: "How many pictures were there?"

Chief Uhrmacher: "I can't say exactly."

Although the Snapchats vanish, investigators say they do have proof of them and the boys have been disciplined.

"At this time, charges have not been filed. However, the case remains under investigation," said Chief Uhrmacher. "We will investigate if there are any others, other than the four we have identified, and we will be in consultation with the District Attorney's Office regarding any appropriate charges."

Neither police nor the superintendent would say exactly how the boys were disciplined.
