Humane Society Takes In Dogs From Overcrowded Shelters In Southeast U.S.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Ten dogs are getting a second chance right here in Pittsburgh after being rescued from shelters in the southeastern United States.

The dogs arrived at the Western Pennsylvania Humane Society Thursday afternoon via the ASPCA's Nancy Silverman Rescue Ride.

The Humane Society says overcrowding has become a problem for shelters in the southeast, and the Rescue Ride is trying to help.

"What they do is move dogs from the southeast where euthanasia numbers are very high to locations in the northeast where it's not so high," said Mary Kennedy Withrow, the Western Pa. Humane Society's director of government and community relations. "So, we were able to help out and take these guys today."

Western Pa. Humane Society officials say two puppies and eight adult dogs were rescued.

This is the first time the Humane Society has partnered with Nancy Silverman Rescue Ride.

"That's what we do as Pittsburghers, help each other out," said Withrow.

The dogs will soon be up for adoption with the many other animals at the shelter.
