3-Year-Old Vigil Shooting Victim Released From Hospital

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Rodnell Lyman, 3, is going home from Children's Hospital today.

He has been here just over a week, and had two surgeries, after getting shot in the cheek at a street vigil in Homewood, to mark the anniversary of the death of 19-year-old Anton Smith.

His mom, Clarice Burse, feels relieved.

"I didn't know what our journey was going to be but now it's at home and recovery at home," she said.

Lyman was one of three people hit by stray gunshots at the vigil that night. So far there have been no arrests in the shooting. The youngest victim has no real idea what happened to him, or why.

"He just knows he has a boo boo. He don't ask, but he knows he has a boo boo, that they have to clean out," says his mother.

She says now that he is headed home the next challenges are getting back to solid foods, and hopefully the routine of preschool very soon. She has gotten through the anger over what happened, but there are still some questions.

She leaned on her faith to get through.

"Prayed about it, she said. "Pray every day and tell God to forgive them.

Yet Burse still wonders, "who shoots into a crowd of kids and women? A maniac does that."
