Ambridge Parents Facing More Charges After Baby Girl's Death

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) -- The parents of a 5-month-old girl who died over the weekend in Beaver County are now facing new charges.

"That little baby, you didn't have to say a word, you looked at it, it would have a big grin all over its face," says Dorothy Christopher, the couple's neighbor. "Pretty little thing and very pleasant."

The little girl, 5-month-old Kourtney Taylor, was found dead inside a car in the Sheetz parking in Baden.

Christopher lives in the downstairs apartment from the child's parents, 21-year-old Katreona Mathews and 27-year-old Tariq Taylor.

"Mom was sleeping in the bed with a 2-year-old and a 3-year-old. When she woke up she found the infant to not be breathing. Dad was sleeping on the floor next to the bed," Ambridge Police Lt. Brian Jameson said of what happened inside the couple's apartment.

That's when Mathews and Taylor jumped in a car and headed to the hospital. But when they ran out of gas, another driver picked them up, called 911 and met paramedics at the Sheetz. However, the infant had already died.

"The vehicle they were driving was stolen out of Zone 2 Pittsburgh. It was a rental car with the renter being out of Canonsburg. Zone 2 had been looking for the vehicle since July 27," said Lt. Jameson.

When police searched the car, they found a sawed-off shotgun in the trunk.

Police say when they searched the couple's second-floor apartment, it was in deplorable conditions. There were no diapers, food or formula, but they did find exposed needles on the floor and empty stamp bag wrappers for heroin.

Taylor is already in the Beaver County Jail on outstanding warrants. Mathews was found and arrested in Monaca.

"Right now, the death is undetermined of the child," said Lt. Jameson. "We have other charges related to the incident, endangering the welfare of a minor for the paraphernalia and exposed needles and stuff lying about the residence. We have prohibited offense of weapons charges for Mr. Taylor, and was have the paraphernalia charges and receiving stolen property for the vehicle."

Both Mathews and Taylor are in the Beaver County Jail.
