Area's 2nd To Last Drive-In Theater May Be On Its Way Out To Make Way For Gas Station

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- One of the last drive-in movie theaters in Allegheny County appears to be on its way out.

Generations of people in Robinson Township grew up with the Twin Hi-Way Drive-In on Steubenville Pike.

Maybe it's ironic that "Jurassic World" is one of the movies playing there, because just like the dinosaurs, it appears this suburban landmark is about to go extinct.

Sheetz wants to put a gas station and convenience store on part of the property, according to the Sam Abatta, chair of the Robinson Township Commissioners.

A public hearing is scheduled for next week.

"It's been in the community for so long," said Megan Farmer, who lives in Robinson. "I grew up around here, and I grew up passing by it every day, it's part of us. By taking it away, it's taking part of community."

She's among more than 3,200 people who have signed an online petition to try to save the drive-in. There's also a Facebook page.

Sheetz would actually only take up a small portion of the property, where the old Butya's Lounge used to be. Sheetz would also pay to have a road widened and a traffic light installed.

KDKA-TV contacted Sheetz, the theater owner, and the property owner, but did not hear back from any of them Wednesday night.

The other remaining drive-in in Allegheny County is in Moon Township.
