Fans Still Hopeful As Pirates Take On Cardinals In Doubleheader

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's a busy day over on the North Shore as the Pirates play a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Game 1 wrapped up late this afternoon with the Pirates keeping their dwindling division title hopes alive in an 8-2 win. Game 2 is set for this evening.

In all likelihood, the Pirates will be playing a one-chance, do-or-die game against the Chicago Cubs next week in the hopes of getting into the National League playoff series.

A light crowd poured into PNC Park Wednesday afternoon with the fans slightly demoralized by a rainout Tuesday night and an excruciating loss to the first place Cardinals Monday night.

"I was disappointed; they had so many runners on base," said Chris Tarpey, of Cranberry Township. "To leave that many runners and can't get anybody in, to lose that way, it was awful."

"Well, the idea was leaving all the men on base, wish we could have gotten some more hits, that would be great, but its baseball. It's a long season," says Jeff Emerick, of Upper St. Clair.

So now the Cards are on the cusp of clinching the division, sending the Pirates to the Wild Card Game. And fans have mixed feelings about the one-game format.

"I hate the one-game format, wish we had a couple of chances," says fan Stacy Roher. "But it's baseball, so anything can happen in one game."

"We benefitted from the format in the past, so this year we're getting it as a detriment. That happens. At least we're going to be in the playoffs, which is better than most other games in the National League," said Tarpey.
