Scholarship Fund Set Up In Memory Of Slain 6-Year-Old

SHALER (KDKA) -- The Shaler Area School District is setting up a scholarship fund in memory of a first grader killed by an alleged drunk driver.

The girl, 6-year-old Ava Campbell, was remembered at the High School football game Friday night.

Volunteers collected donations to support the family and to get the scholarship fund started.

Football parent Michelle Poole told KDKA's Kym Gable, "It's a hard time. Everyone's touched by it. There's not a person that hasn't been touched or hasn't reached out, so we're proud."

"Really, this community started comming together the first part of the week when everyone heard what happened," said band parent Dave Reagle.

Dozens of fundraisers and ceremonies had already been held throughout Shaler and neighboring municipalities.

At halftime, there was a moment of silence, followed by the release of hundreds of pastel balloons. Cheerleaders wore shirts that read, "Ava needs her angel wings."
