Hulton Bridge Closes As Crews Ready Replacement

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Hulton Bridge is closed for the next two weeks, which means drivers should be prepared for detours and potential delays

It shut down just after midnight and it will remain closed until Oct. 20.

"At first, you saw people trying to meander their way and find a different route. But, once it settled, people found their routes and it really wasn't horrible. It was livable," Bonnie Lack said.

"I miss it when it's closed, but I know it's only a short time. I'll be okay," John Whiteford said.

Drivers say they aren't looking forward to detouring around the Hulton Bridge. The detour is about six miles in any direction to get to another bridge.

"If the bridge is closed, I absolutely don't come to Oakmont a lot. I just avoid it because I can't get across the river," Whiteford said.

Others agree that the detour and delays are an inconvenience, but many are looking forward to the end result.

The brand new, $65 million, 4-lane bridge is slated to open on Oct. 20.

The new structure will replace the century-old bridge, which will be demolished in 2016.

"There's something about that structure, you know, it's been there for 105 years and it's done its job, that's for sure, but I think the four lanes are going to make a difference," Oakmont Bakery Owner Marc Serrao said.

Serrao said he isn't expecting a big drop in business during the closure. As for delays getting to and from the bakery, customers will have to be patient and allow some extra time.

Police are stationed at key intersections to help move traffic along.

"I went to Sam's in Pittsburgh Mills this morning and I went the New Kensington Bridge. It took me probably five minutes longer. It wasn't a really big deal," Serrao said.
