Parents Face Charges After Young Children Found Living In Filth

LATROBE (KDKA) – Two parents are facing charges after their kids were found living in filth.

Police say there was garbage and dog waste everywhere inside the apartment.

"I am disgusted, there's just evil out there," said Latrobe Police Chief James Bumar.

The one-year-old, and 4-month old were discovered after a neighbor found them home alone.

The neighbors could tell the children were in bad shape physically so they called police.

"There were multiple piles of dog feces on the floor, multiple bags of open garbage. Rotten food, and a sink full of dirty dishes," Chief Bumar said.

Officers say there was no formula or diapers, and the three-month old had an extreme rash.

"A rash would be putting it mildly, this was more like blistering and open sores," Bumar said.

The baby was rushed to Children's Hospital for treatment.

The parents are both facing charges, but officers say 22-year-old Cody Michael Ghrist didn't have much to say when asked why the children were living in filth.

"No excuse, he just said he knew this was coming," Police said.

The mother, 18-year-old Ashley Myers and Ghrist are both facing endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering the welfare of another.

Both are free on bond.
