Crews Investigating Sealant Spills In Perry South, Perry North & Summer Hill

PERRY SOUTH (KDKA)- Police and public works crews are looking into several sealant spills on the North Side.

The spill was first reported around 2:30 a.m. along Suffolk Street in the Perry South neighborhood.

Barry Warble, the district chief for Pittsburgh Paramedics who is also part of a Hazmat team, says the liquid seems to be some sort of sealant. It is possibly from asphalt or roofing materials.

Officials said the sealant is non-toxic, but it was not drying as quickly as it should.

"It looks like someone opened up a valve, drove around and let it drain out," said Warble. "Right now it's a slip hazard, it's gooey, it's not drying like an asphalt sealer should."

The spill stretches for about five or six blocks in the Perry South neighborhood. About a mile stretch of Hazelton Street is closed due the spill. Parts of Suffolk, Osgood and Burgess Streets are also closed. The trail from the spill stopped on Osgood Street.

Officials say the same substance was spilled for about a mile along Nelson Run Road, Evergreen Road, Baytree Street and Bijou Way in the Summer Hill-Perry North part of town. Along that street, officials found tubes and a valve.

Officials think a truck came down the streets in the Summer Hill, Perry North and Perry South neighborhoods and spilled the liquid, but they aren't sure if it was an accident or done on purpose.

There are reports that someone may have tried to dump this sealant liquid down a sewer drain.
