Disappointing End To Season For Pirates, Fans

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Like the dense fog that covered PNC Park Thursday morning, Pirates fans are overshadowed by the disappointing Wild Card game loss against the Chicago Cubs.

A record total of 40,899 fans packed PNC Park to watch the game. However, the feelings of joy were dampened when the Cubs jumped out to an early lead.

"One and done, (we) kind of knew that was a possibility and Chicago got the best of us," said Dave Huber, a Pirates season ticket holder.

He didn't go the game last night, but watched from his hotel room.

"It's a little bit of a letdown for sure, but they had a good season, so you can't be too mad at that," said Jonathan Haith, a Pirates fan who traveled from Delaware to see the game.

Haith said he had confidence in his Pirates, but Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta was unstoppable.

"Arrieta, he was lights out," said Haith. "A pitcher like that, you can't be too mad at that either. He was just dominant for sure."

"Arrieta had our number last night," said Huber.

The 29-year-old Arrieta, who's been unbeaten since July 25, struck out 11 without issuing a walk. He even dusted himself off when he was plunked by Pirates reliever Tony Watson.

The benches and bullpens cleared when Watson was issued a warning. Sean Rodriguez, who was ejected, expressed his frustration by taking down a cooler.

"I saw Rodriguez hit that cooler, I wanted to go right next to him and hit the cooler with him. I understood his frustration," Larry Cmar, a Pirates fan from the Upper North Side said

Several fans say the Pirates are a strong team, and "one and done" Wild Card game, just isn't fair.

"Minimum, best of three," said Cmar.
