First Freezing Temps Of The Season Possible This Weekend

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Well, we knew it was coming and this weekend we will see the biggest dip in temperatures since last April.

Highs for both Saturday and Sunday will likely hit the upper 40s with overnight lows falling to near freezing on Sunday morning. While Saturday morning won't be as cold light rain and pockets of drizzle will ensure the need to bundle up before heading out the door.

Looking at the climatology of Pittsburgh, the median first freeze over the last 30 years for Allegheny County has been October 10th. You can see your county and the average first freeze dates on the map.

No real surprise that the further north and east you are the early the date is for you.

With temperatures falling to the low 30s, I have a couple of concerns.

The first is that we may have issues with slick roads.

At this point it appears Monday would be the day where we could have a couple of slick spots as we start the day as we have temperatures at or just below 32° with fog developing.

This can cause freezing fog conditions and slick spots in isolated spots. Clearly for confident drivers this will pose an issue as they are not expecting to see icy conditions to start the day.

Secondly, weekend gardeners should be prepared to cover and protect tender vegetation.

The average first date for killing frost for Pittsburgh is October 20th, but some plants can be damaged with temperatures as low as 36°.

If you're not ready for fall like weather just yet, temperatures will be briefly warming up next week.

By Tuesday it appears temperatures will be back in the 60s with comfortable weather expected both Tuesday and Wednesday.
