Aviary Introduces 2 New Snowy Owls At Halloween Celebration

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The National Aviary is gearing up for Halloween with an "Owl-o-ween" celebration featuring the center's newest exhibit.

"We introduced two male snowy owls, Tundra and Glacier are their names, into what was our eagle exhibit," says Chris Gaus, the senior aviculturist at the National Aviary.

This is the first time the National Aviary has exhibited snowy owls in more than 10 years, and to celebrate, they are hosting the "Owl-o-ween" weekend.

Those whooooo attend are urged to wear their Halloween costume, and they can enjoy arts and crafts, a creepy crawly bug station and the gross food table.

The snowy owls are ages 2 and 5. They were rescued from the wild.

"Both of the snowy owls came from a wildlife rehabber," says Gaus. "They were injured in the wild and are not releasable, so they are not able to go back into the wild and survive on their own."

As they get older, they will lose more and more of their spots, adult male snowy owls are almost entirely white.

Once the weather warms up in the spring, they be moved until next season.

"Snowy owls don't exactly do well in our summertime temperatures, they get a little too hot," says Gaus. "They are going to be on exhibit all winter long, then sometime during the spring they will be put in an air conditioned area so they will be a little cooler during the summer."
