Cam Heyward Continuing To Honor Father Despite NFL Fine
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Last week, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward received a fine for honoring his father, who passed away from brain cancer.
Heyward was fined by the NFL for writing "Iron Head" on his eye black during last week's game against the San Diego Chargers.
"Iron Head" was the nickname for Cam's father, Craig Heyward, who passed away from brain cancer in 2006.
Undeterred, Heyward continued to pay tribute to his father and those affected by cancer during Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals.
KDKA-TV's Rich Walsh spoke to Heyward after the game and asked if he expected to receive another fine.
"I don't know. I understand there's a policy, but it's bigger than just me and my love for my dad. There's a fight going on with cancer and the love and support I experienced this week from fans in interactions, I can't turn away, I can't be someone I'm not. There's a big fight with cancer and I want to be part of it. I want to support those fighters out there and those struggling," Heyward said.
If he is fined, Heyward would like to see the money be put to good use.
"I would love for all of that money to go to a cancer awareness program. There's too many people out there that need our help and if we turn our backs on them and think that they don't deserve it, we're wrong," Heyward said.
Heyward isn't alone in the Steelers' locker room either. Earlier this year, running back DeAngelo Williams was told he couldn't wear pink for the entire season to honor his mother and four aunts who passed away from breast cancer.
Instead, Williams is showing how much he cares about breast cancer awareness by paying for 53 mammograms and dyeing his hair pink.
