Police, Bomb Squad Investigating After 3 Substances Found In Downtown Park

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after workers found some suspicious materials in a park in the middle of Downtown Pittsburgh Tuesday afternoon.

Port Authority Police and the Allegheny County Bomb Squad were called to the Mellon Green, in between Grant and Ross Streets, after the materials were found in BNY Mellon Park.

According to officials, exterminators are working for the Port Authority made the discovery.

The three suspicious materials were found in separate containers not far from the building over the Steel Plaza T station.

Sources tell KDKA the materials found were camping fuel, lye and Drano.

As long as those three ingredients are kept separate, they are considered harmless. However, officials say if they are combined, there is potential for a possible bomb.

KDKA has also learned that those three ingredients are used to make methamphetamine.

Who left the materials in the park and why remains a mystery, but police continue to investigate.

Officials say though that there was never any danger at the park because of the substances.
