Flames, Smoke Pour From Squirrel Hill Condominium

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Flames and smoke poured from a condominium in Squirrel Hill Wednesday evening, damaging the structure and forcing residents out.

The three-alarm fire broke out in a second-story apartment in the three-story condominium at the intersection of Fifth and Murray Hill Avenues.

Flames were shooting from the roof when firefighters arrived on the scene around 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Yale Feingold and his wife Margery lived in the unit where the fire erupted.

Feingold told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti, "We have large glass doors leading out to a porch, and smoke started to come inside. I looked outside, and I saw flames and smoke in the corner."

A number of tenants in the condo were elderly, some were disabled.

An 84-year old man was with his caregiver when the fire started. The pair was among the dozen or so residents put on a Port Authority bus while temporary accommodations were made for them.

Caregiver Aquil Abdul Salaam said, "We smelled smoke by the stairwell and the elevator, and saw flames shooting out the windows. It was really terrible."

While the fire was confined to one unit, there was smoke and water damage elsewhere in the large building.

First responders were credited with helping to get some of the fire victims to safety as smoke filled the hallways.

Emily Schaffer, a Pittsburgh Public Safety Department spokeswoman, said, "Firefighters did a great job of putting out an advanced fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians."
