Duquesne President Apologizes For 'Libertine' Remark

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The president of Duquesne University has apologized for comments he made suggesting that students who move off-campus do so to pursue what he called a "libertine lifestyle" of drinking and sex.

President Charles Dougherty said he was talking about construction projects at a recent campus town hall meeting with employees and noted an increase in the number of students moving off-campus for the junior and senior years.

He said it was in that context that he suggested that "greater access to alcohol" and "sexual behaviors" unacceptable on a Catholic university campus were factors. But he said he didn't mean to imply that every student moves for such reasons.

The Duquesne Duke reported on the remarks and said in an editorial that many students were likely moving off-campus for cheaper accommodations.
