KDKA-TV Debuts New Main News Set

KDKA is proud to introduce the station's new main news studio, which debuted during the 4 p.m. newscast on Oct. 26, 2015.

The set, designed by Devlin Design Group, was nearly 9 months in the making, from conception and design, to demolition of the old KDKA set, to construction of the new set including new lighting and camera positions.

Large portions of the old KDKA set were donated to the Waynesburg College journalism department.

The centerpiece of the new set is a series of fourteen 90-inch vertical monitors which show the city skyline and are designed to look like a window to the city. This is appropriate given that KDKA is the only local television station located in downtown Pittsburgh.

The set features a large desk with a front of the desk monitor. Pittsburgh Today Live also has a new set within the studio featuring a comfortable couch seating area for interviews.

The set features a 12x6½ foot rear projection monitor which will be a backdrop for Pittsburgh Today Live, sports and other segments; a 16x5 foot monitor wall featuring four by three individual monitors that can be used to display graphics, video, or in multiple combinations.

The new weather center features a glassed in room for the meteorologists' work stations and a standup desk.

The set also has "green screen" wall that runs onto the floor, allowing for head-to-toe chroma key shots. And there's an Accuweather Storyteller touch screen monitor that features the ability to advance graphics at the touch of the screen and the ability to telestrate over maps, video and graphics for news, and for sports and weather stories.

The set colors and materials, in blue, silver and white, were designed to create a contemporary look. But the set also includes a wood laminate floor for warmth.
