NFL Fines Steelers' Gay & Williams For Raising Awareness To Causes On Field
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) –Two members of the Pittsburgh Steelers were fined this week for their attempts to raise awareness to different causes.
According to KDKA-TV's Rich Walsh, William Gay and DeAngelo Williams received fines from the NFL.
William Gay wore purple cleats to call attention to domestic violence. Gay's mother was killed in an act of domestic violence and he's worn purple cleats in October for the past two seasons.
For wearing the cleats, he was fined $5,787.
Meanwhile, Williams was fined $5,757 by the NFL for having "We will find a cure" and the breast cancer awareness pink ribbon printed on his eye black.
Williams has lost his mother and four aunts to breast cancer. His mom was 53-years-old.
Williams wanted to wear pink for the entire season, but the league declined his request. NFL rules forbid players from displaying any "personal messages."
As a result, Williams dyed his hair pink.
Earlier this season, defensive lineman Cam Heyward was fined for writing "Iron Head" on his eye black.
"Iron Head" was the nickname for Cam's father Craig Heyward who passed away from brain cancer in 2006.
