Benefit Held In Honor Of 10-Year Old Boy In Float Accident

MERCER, CO. (KDKA)- Nicholas King is out of Children's Hospital, but his recovery is far from over. On October 14, the 10-year-old fell from a float and was run over during a homecoming parade along West Butler Street in Mercer County.

"He spent 11 days in the hospital. The first-few days were the roughest," said Donald King, Nicholas' father.

Nick has made significant progress. In fact, over the weekend, he was able to stop by this benefit held at the Mercer Area Junior-Senior High School. The event was organized in honor of Nick.

"To see him now be able to walk down those steps into the cafeteria and be given a round of applause, it just shows you the power, the power of the medicine he was under, the power of the people who are around him and his strength as a human being," Donald said.

Zaleigh King, Nick's sister, spoke about her feelings and the benefit itself.

"He just felt so grateful for everybody that was here and supporting him and there are so many people here, people we don't even know that are still here and helping us."

The community came together for food, music, raffles and an auction. Money raised will help pay for Nick's medical bills.

Aside from the financial help, Nick's family members say they are thankful for all of the prayers and good vibes from friends, family and kind strangers.
