Westmoreland Co. Reserve Unit To Guard Guantanamo Bay Prisoners

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. (AP) - An Army Reserve unit in Westmoreland County will be trained early next year and assigned to guard prisoners for nine months at Guantanamo Bay.

The Valley News Dispatch reports about 120 members of the 307th Military Police Company in New Kensington will be trained at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas and February before they'll be sent to guard the detention camp.

Maj. Levar Armstrong, a spokesman for the command overseeing the reserve unit, says military police units are commonly used to work as guards at Guantanamo Bay.

He says, "It's very typical for reserve MPs to do that mission. The active duty folks have other missions."
