Parkway West Lighting Issue A Mystery For PennDOT

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- PennDOT is trying to figure out why the lights on the Parkway West aren't coming on when the sun sets.

If you've traveled through the Fort Pitt Tunnel past Green Tree during the nighttime hours recently, you may have noticed that you're driving in darkness.

As the sun sets, the lights over the Parkway West should come on, but right now it's just pitch blackness, and it's all starting an hour earlier now thanks to the time change over the weekend.

It's become a safety issue for not only drivers, but also workers.

"We don't know if it's just a natural deterioration of the lighting system throughout the corridor as we've been working there, or if it's actually something that is project related," says PennDOT District 11 spokesperson Steve Cowan.

PennDOT has crews trying to figure out what's wrong to fix it.

An electrical contractor has figured out the issue in the Route 51 area just outside the tunnel and a couple of those lights, at least, have come back on.
