Project Journey Helping Women Veterans Return To Civilian Life

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Returning home from deployment can be challenging for women veterans.

Many struggle to find jobs and housing, but there is help available.

Sarah Spencer spent six years in the Army, followed by seven years in the Maryland National Guard.

When she moved to Pittsburgh after her final deployment, her first priority was being reacquainted with family.

"There is a transition phase you have to go through. You know, when you're overseas and you're in combat, your guard is always up. So, when you come back, your guard is still up," Spencer said.

Spencer struggled with adjusting to civilian life and finding work was another challenge.

Then, housing became an issue and she needed a place to stay with her children.

She turned to the Veterans Leadership Program of Western Pennsylvania and Project Journey, which provide emergency homes.

"They are fully furnished, and we have volunteers that come in and they will supply food, bedding and get that place completely set up for that woman veteran," Project Journey Coordinator Trudy Friend said.

Project Journey was launched two years ago and since then, it's provided immediate shelter for more than 40 veterans. The women are able to stay in homes or apartments, free of charge, for up to 90 days.

"When I came into this house, I was like 'Wow!' There was such a sense of peace in this house, so when we walked in the door, we felt at home," Spencer said.

Spencer said she was able to relax and take a breath. She is now getting back on her feet and said she couldn't have done it without Project Journey.

"Sometimes as women veterans, you know, we are prideful and we're strong women, we are independent women, but we have to be willing to receive help when help is needed," Spencer said.

Project Journey always has a waiting list, but the goal is to acquire more apartments and homes for women in need.
